Nottingham, 8,532grt, (Federal SN Co. Ltd had been sailing
independently on her maiden voyage from Glasgow to Australia via
New York with a general cargo. On the 7th November 1941 the ship
was intercepted by U-74, one of 14 U-boats of the "Raubritter"
patrol group. and sunk by torpedo in position 53' 24N 31' 51W. No
distress call was ever sent and it is not known if the crew had
time to launch any lifeboats. The Captain, Francis C. Petty OBE
